Carteret County: Best Chance In Nation To Get Hit By Hurricane
County by County Hurricane Forecast
WECT-TV6 A new report says counties along our section of the coast have a one in five chance of being hit this year.
NEW HANOVER CO. - The new county by county hurricane forecast is gloomy, and Kure Beach Town Council Member Jim Dugan is trying to figure out how to convince townspeople trouble is likely coming. "We gotta prepare for the worst. If it's like last year we'll breathe easy," said Dugan.
A new report says counties along our section of the coast have a one in five chance of being hit this year.
Florida researchers Chuck Watson and Mark Johnson gathered their information based on hurricane patterns over more than 150 years. Here are the percentages of being hit by a hurricane for some North Carolina and South Carolina counties: Cateret Co.- 22.4% (best chance in the nation) Onslow Co.- 20% (7th best chance in the nation) New Hanover Co.- 19.1% (11th best chance in the nation) Brunswick Co.- 18.8% (14th best chance in the nation) Pender Co.- 18.1% (22nd best chance in the nation) Horry Co.0 14.5% (68th best chance in the nation) Researcher Chuck Watson says those numbers are up from last year, but at least a storm won't come as a surprise this summer.
"If you are going to pick a disaster, a hurricane is the one to pick. There's no reason not to be prepared," said Watson. Reported by Sarah Warlick
